My Journey

INTP - The Architect
10 Print "Hello, world."

I've been interested in games for as long as I can remember. I always looked forward to the times my mother would bring me along to her job sites where she worked as a housekeeper because I would get to play with her client's electronic games all day long. They had so many! Electronic games from the late 70's such as Zap, Quiz Wiz, Merlin and Head to Head Baseball. Even a Pong home console! Eventually I'd discover cartridge-based consoles such as the Atari 2600 and Intellivision from friends and neighbors who could afford them. Our household would eventually acquire our own games, much to my delight.

Playing those games were a blast but it wasn't until a used Commodore 64 entered our home when my journey as a computer programmer would begin, unbeknowst to me at the time. After all, I was only 8 years old…

I typed in my first lines of code on that machine and I was hooked. I read the manuals, I entered programs from books and magazines and I watched as the graphics flew across the screen and listened as the audio emitted from the sound chip. I couldn't get enough. Regrettably, I wouldn't find out until much later how truly fabulous the C64 was. I had already moved on to the Commodore Amiga and beyond by then.

Throughout school, I focused on computer programming, all the while ensuring that games remained a big priority for me. I often visited the local arcades and I purchased many game consoles and handhelds shortly within their release. After graduating, doors opened up for me and I quickly started my own consulting business. My skills were in high demand and I was fairly successful, travelling often to work at client sites in Canada and within the US. Unfortunately, this work was not in the game development sector, but I was very good at it. Still, I continued to dabble in game development on my spare time.

These days, I am fortunate enough to devote a little more than half of my time to game development in an attempt to become self sufficient creating games on multiple platforms. I've learned several tools of the trade, my favourite of which is GameMaker Studio 2. I took a 10-month game design course to help supplement my engineering skills. I've also amassed many contacts in the industry including concept artists, pixel artists, composers, audio engineers and game designers, both indie and AAA. I've also published one small game (Memroid) to understand the pipeline from beginning to end. Everything is going splendidly.

Unsurprisingly, my game development efforts are focused on retro and retro-inspired games as well as remakes of classic games. Perhaps it's because I feel some regret at never having professionally worked on games during the 8- and 16-bit bit gaming generations. Whatever the reason, I am elated that retro-gaming is still alive and well today. And I am immersing myself in it.

Which leads me to the next section…

My Personality Type

INTP - The Architect

INTPs are philosophical innovators, fascinated by logical analysis, systems, and design. They are preoccupied with theory, and search for the universal law behind everything they see. They want to understand the unifying themes of life, in all their complexity.

INTPs are detached, analytical observers who can seem oblivious to the world around them because they are so deeply absorbed in thought. They spend much of their time focused internally: exploring concepts, making connections, and seeking understanding. To the Architect, life is an ongoing inquiry into the mysteries of the universe.

My PSN Profile

PlayStation Gaming

I play all sorts of games on various platforms but, by far, I love gaming on the Sony PlayStation platform the most. I have been a loyal PlayStation fan since their first gaming console was released in 1995 and am currently gaming on the PS5. I am addicted to the platform's trophy system which, to me, is one of biggest and most exciting draws in console gaming since it was invented.

Feel free to send me a friend request with a note if you are looking for a friend on the PlayStation Network. My PSN online ID is AarbronBeast.
